This September, we are training our spotlights on Sapphires – one of the four cardinal gemstones. Our gemstone collection this month will be all about sapphires- the classic blue sapphires, but also yellow, pink and white sapphires. Watch out for a gorgeous green variety too!
While blue Sapphires are best known, sapphires are actually idiochromatic, which means they appear in a very wide range of colours. Best known, after blue sapphires, are yellow and pink sapphires, but there is also green, white, orange and a very rare pink-orange Sapphire.
Did you know rubies, another cardinal gemstone, are technically the same as a Sapphire? A red Sapphire is known as a Ruby – a fact that is not commonly known.
Famous sapphires include the famous blue sapphire engagement ring that prince Charles gave to lady Diana. There is also the humungous 423 carat blue Logan Sapphire from Sri Lanka, currently housed in the Smithsonian Institute. And finally, we can depend on our jewellery queen Liz Taylor to own a gorgeous sapphire, and she does – a 20 carat engagement ring.
We love our fresh new Sapphire jewellery this month – we are particularly excited about the lovely multi-coloured pieces that form part of the collection.
