You won’t regret bookmarking this one. Precious jewellery is called so for a reason. They are highly prized possessions of a women’s wardrobe and there’s no second-guessing that. And with the festive season crowding our calendars, this is not just the time of the year when we adorn ourselves with our finest but also the time when we bring out those baubles for TLC before flaunting them. As it turns out, maintaining our precious bling needn’t blow a hole in one’s pockets. All it takes is a bit of resourcefulness and some supplies from in and around the house to make jewellery look good as new again. We’ve rounded up some of the handiest hacks for you. Try them first and thank us later!
- Skip silver polish, squirt some regular tomato ketchup onto a clean cloth and rub tarnished silver baubles with it. Wipe off the excess ketchup with a damp cloth and your silver is bright as a new penny.
- The next time your chain is all knotted up, sprinkle some baby powder onto them. This helps loosen up the knots that are then easier to pick apart!
- Keep track of diamond studs by fastening them to colourful buttons, so that you’ll never lose them again! If you’re hard pressed for buttons, substitute them with ribbon.
- Apply some lotion to your finger to pry off tight rings. Not only does it act as a natural lubricant, but it also shrinks your skin, and your ring slides off with minimal damage (to it and to you!).
- Your brand new bangle just won’t fit? All you need to do is wear a plastic bag around your hand like a glove and slip the bangle on from over it. It works like magic every single time!
- Solid gold jewellery (without gemstones) can be made shiny again by pouring some beer on a clean cloth and polishing it. Similarly, use vodka to clean your diamonds and make them dazzle like they did when you bought them!
- Prevent fine chains from getting tangled by threading them through a drinking straw from one side. This is especially useful while packing jewellery!
- Secure the tricky clasp of your bracelet by yourself (gasp!) by fastening a paperclip onto the catch and holding it while you snap on the bracelet with the other hand. No more sliding!
- The feeling of losing the screw to your favourite earrings is the worst. You can now substitute them with a tiny piece of eraser, and it works just as well!
