How To Clean Your Diamond Earrings At Home In 5 Easy Steps

The one common factor between artificial and fine jewellery is that both collect dust. Just like every other object in existence. We’ve all grown up watching our grandmothers and mother carefully taking out their precious metals and stones, delicately cleaning it, piece by piece.

Here are some quick tips on how to maintain your diamonds and keep them sparkling all year around.

Do you need to clean your diamond earrings?

Diamonds may not always come under the daily wear collection of jewellery. While some of us wear diamonds every day, we also have those more exotic earrings or other pieces of diamond jewellery we keep in the safe only to take out for a special occasion. Regardless of how often we wear our diamonds, we still need to clean them.

We often use sunscreen and other moisturising lotions to leave a little bit of residue behind. You will find that the residue collects around the earrings or the piercings, causing a faint unpleasant odour. Even those of us who don’t use such products can produce yeast, dead skin cells, and bacteria if we don’t clean the area periodically. It transmits to the earrings adding a fine film of grime around the diamonds or gemstones and the screws.

Watch out if your ears are newly pierced because the dirt or sweat can lead to a bacterial infection. It is impossible to avoid the dirt collecting in and around the diamond earrings. It happens regardless of the metal – gold, gold-plated, silver, or platinum. Such dirt can also dull the shine of the diamonds. For all these reasons and more, you should clean the diamonds to ensure they look and feel new all the time. “How?” you may ask! It is pretty simple. Follow the steps below, and you will always have clean and well-preserved diamond earrings to wear whenever you want.

Five steps to clean your diamond earrings at home

Cleaning diamond earrings is a straightforward process. But, there is a process, and it is best if you follow the steps to make it easy for yourself.

What do you need to clean your diamonds?

  • Bowl
  • Soft cloth
  • Liquid soap
  • A soft brush (toothbrush)
  • Warm water

How to clean diamond earrings?

Step 1 – Place the earrings in a bowl of warm water. Make sure that the bowl is placed on a flat surface, as you would not want the earrings to slip out of the bowl. Let them soak for a few minutes.

Step 2 – Add a little liquid soap into the bowl. Ideally, it should be unscented soap, mainly because you don’t need additional ingredients included in the soap. Dyes or fragrances may not be ideal when washing diamonds. Dishwasher soap would be perfect.

Step 3 – Mix the soap water around a little so that the earrings get a good soak. You will find that some of the dirt is loosened into the water. Leaving the earrings in the water for around 30 minutes should suffice.

Step 4 – Take the diamond earrings out of the bowl and rinse them in clean water to remove the soapy residue. At this time, you can use a dry lint-free cloth to wipe the earrings gently.

Step 5 – If you find that there is still some dirt stuck to the earrings, you can use a soft-bristled toothbrush (children’s toothbrush preferably) and rush across the earrings. Any remaining dirt will fall off the surface and leave the crevices of the earrings. Brushing very gently is a must as you would not want to dislodge the diamonds in the process.

Diamond earrings come in many settings. Some of them are prong types like the S’ Cluster diamond hoop earrings, and others have micro prong settings like the Ameya diamond stud earrings. So, it is essential to keep the setting in mind when cleaning diamond earrings.

What you don’t use to clean diamond earrings
There are a few specific cleaning agents you must avoid.
  • Ammonia- Ammonia is not a good cleaning agent for diamonds as it may damage clarity-enhanced ones.
  • Bicarbonate of Soda- Baking soda is abrasive and can scratch your diamond earrings.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide- Peroxide can tarnish the metal; for example, sterling silver can get oxidised.
  • Rubbing alcohol- This can dull the shine of your diamonds.

Now that you know how to keep your diamond earrings clean and sparkly, you are ready to collect a few of them to wear daily or for special occasions. CaratLane offers over 5500 designs to choose from, each of them crafted with an eye to making the diamonds stand out.
