Aquamarine is a beryl variant and a relative of emerald that occurs naturally in India, Pakistan and parts of Africa, Brazil, and most recently, in China.
The word Aquamarine originates from Aqua and Mare, Latin for sea water. The name reflects the colour of these beautiful stones which can range from pale blue-green to deep blue, but always in various shades of ocean blue. Not surprisingly, therefore, myths and legends associate this stone with the sea – the stone was believed to be treasured by mermaids, and therefore were considered lucky for seafarers. Sailors wore this stone for courage, safe passage and protection from storms and other dangers at sea.
In the Indian tradition, Aquamarine is believed to bring clarity of expression, and is associated mainly with the throat Chakra. The stone is also prized as a powerful meditation aid.
