Akshaya is a Sanskrit term that may be translated to mean “undiminished” in English, whileTritiya is the third day of the Indian lunar calendar. Since time immemorial, Akshaya Tritiya, or Akha Teej as some call it today, is held as one of the most auspicious days in the Indian calendar, a day when it is considered highly fortunate to start new ventures. It is believed a pursuit commenced on this day will grow, prosper and enjoy unfading success in the future.
This day sees mention in many Indian scriptures. For example, the Puranas say that Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, was born on this day. Sage Vyasa, composer of the great Indian epic Mahabharata, is said to have chosen this day to begin his narration.
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the 3rd lunar day of the Vaishakha month, usually coinciding in part with May. All over India, this day is picked as the luckiest in the year to begin a new business and to acquire land or property. Gold and diamond jewellery bought in this day is believed to be exceptionally lucky.
On the lighter side, Akshaya Tritiya has to be every girl’s favorite day on the calander, because she gets a legitimate excuse to go jewellery buying. After all, on the 16th of May, you are not buying bling, you are keeping traditions alive!
