What is a Valentine?

We all know that the holiday on Feb 14th gets its name from St. Valentine, a priest who performed marriages in secret during roman times, when marriages were forbidden for men who were required to serve in the military. The martyred priest was later beatified and made the patron saint of romantic love.
Did you know that even though we refer to a sweetheart / Feb 14th dinner date as a Valentine, the word traditionally refers to hand-made greeting cards that bore love messages, to be given to a loved one? Giving other gifts is a more recent phenomenon, but the traditional gift for Valentine’s Day has always been these hand-made cards, or Valentines.
That was our inspiration for creating heart-shaped engravable pendants in gold that would bear love messages that you can customize – you can either pick from available messages, or for some designs, you can even write your own message.

This year, if you are looking to gift her something different, look back into history. You ensure that the tradition of giving a valentine is kept alive, but you get to do it in style. While you hand her a beautiful engraved pendant, you can tell her that you are giving her, well, a Valentine.
