The Hope Diamond, the large 45.52 carat , deep-
blue diamond is one of the World’s most famous Gems and its celebrating its 50th anniversary in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, Washington D.C. The
diamond price is estimated at around $200 million USD. The Diamond is currently set in a
platinum setting and surrounded by 16 white pear shaped and cushion cut diamonds and is suspended from a
chain containing 45 diamonds. From time to time the diamond does get removed from the setting for cleaning. Normally during these times, the diamond is not on display. This time however the diamond will be displayed by itself without a setting for a few months In addition to this the Smithsonian is celebrating the occasion by designing three possible settings and has invited the public to vote for their favourite setting. Now if you’re a jewellery lover, this is probably an almost irresistible contest. The 3 designs labelled Journey of Hope, Embracing Hope and Renewed Hope have been designed by the New York Jewellery Firm Harry Winston. This is the firm that originally donated the diamond to the Smithsonian.
The first design “Journey of Hope” symbolizes the American Experiences. In it the stone asymmetrically joins strands of baguettes. The designer Gali calls it a crossroad – uniting hope and opportunity
The second design “Embracing Hope” has the hope diamond hugged by 3 rows of baguette diamonds. The ideas was to create a create a contrast between the brilliance and life of the Hope itself and the look of the baguettes
The third design “Renewed Hope” has dangling diamonds that recall the flow of water in nature and has been designed with a lot of brilliance to enhance the beauty and energy of the hope diamond. The Hope diamond will be temporarily set on the most popular setting and will be put on display in the new setting during Spring 2010. It was last possessed by Henry Philip Hope whose name it bears. Legend says that The Hope Diamond was stolen from one of the Indian deities Idol due to which it is cursed and bad befalls those who possess it. The fictional “Heart of the Ocean” Necklace which featured in the film Titanic is based on the Hope Diamond and the curse it carries!
